Municipal District of Taber Emergency Operations Center
MEDIA RELEASE - Overland Flooding
UPDATE: Friday April 6, 2018 – 6:00 PM

A State of Local Emergency (SOLE) to include the entire Municipal District of Taber is currently in effect.
No evacuation orders or emergency advisories are in effect at this time.

Municipal staff are currently engaged with both flood mitigation, monitoring road barricades, observing and reporting any flood flows, and providing information to the Operations Section on the status of culverts and drainage channels.

Grading and gravelling crew are repairing smaller washouts and winging snow back that has drifted in some areas.

Operations continue to develop plans for the coming days including evaluation of risk areas and operational requirements.

Municipal and contractor excavators will continue to clear drainage channels in anticipation of warmer weather.

Due to the overland drainage the M.D. of Taber has a number of roads that are closed and or have limited access. Active Road Closures are posted on the M.D. of Taber website under announcements

All Gravel Roads within the M.D. of Taber are now subject to a 75% road ban. Heavy trucks have damaged a number of saturated gravel roads and this measure has been implemented to protect municipal infrastructure.

Cold temperatures will continue to slow the flowing overland flood waters.

Forecast temperatures leading in to the weekend are for -10 to -12 although a warming trend appears to be starting on Sunday April 8th . With warming temperatures we will expect water flows to increase in the days following.

Landowners are requested to not increase water flows by unnecessary pumping or excavation.

Additional volumes of water pumped into roadways will threaten neighbouring lands and residential properties as well as threaten irrigation and municipal infrastructure.

Citizens are invited to contact the MD of Taber Administration Office at 403-223-3541 to report new or rapidly changing overland flooding conditions.
