The Municipal District of Taber issues a Home Occupation Permit for the secondary use of a dwelling unit (or its ancillary buildings or land) for trade, profession, or craft as supplementary employment, provided it is not readily visible from adjacent properties. 

  • The Home Occupation Permit is renewable annually, with a fee of $50.

A development permit is required if your deck is higher than 48 inches, has a roof, or will be enclosed. Decks over 48 inches pose safety risks, while enclosed decks are considered more permanent structures that can increase the value of your property. Both types of decks also require a building permit.

Yes, a development permit is required for the construction of a residence, garage, or placement of a mobile/modular home on rural property or within any of our three Hamlets.

Development must be set back at least 150 feet from the centerline of a rural road. If you need to build closer than this, you must apply for a development permit requesting a waiver of the 150-foot setback requirement.

For an interior lot, the required setbacks within any of our three Hamlets are:

  • 25 feet from the front lot line

  • 5 feet from one side lot line

  • 10 feet from the other side lot line

Within any of our three Hamlets, all ancillary buildings and structures must be set back a minimum of 5 feet from both the side and rear lot lines. Carports and garages are permitted in the side yard, as long as they maintain a minimum distance of 5 feet from the side lot line.

In rear yards, fences can be up to 6 feet high, within any of our 3 Hamlets. For fences located within 25 feet of the front property line, the maximum height is 3 feet.
