MD of Taber Advancing Property Tax Deadline in 2023

For Immediate Release

March 10, 2022

TABER, ALBERTA — The Municipal District of Taber has announced the intention of advancing the property tax collection deadline from November 15th to September 30th beginning in the 2023 taxation year. Penalties applied after the tax collection deadline are also changing in 2023. You can see the complete list of changes to tax penalties by clicking here.

This announcement comes following their regular March 8th, 2022 Council meeting pursuant to the newly passed Property Tax Penalty Bylaw No 1985. The new bylaw focuses on sustainable financial planning for the future and maintains and balances revenue to support MD of Taber services within legislative parameters.

“We are providing residents with as much advance notice as possible,” explains Reeve Harris. “Advancing the property tax deadline allows the MD of Taber to be more consistent with other municipal tax deadlines. The late November tax deadline coupled with the loss in unpaid tax revenue from oil and gas companies creates tremendous uncertainty and guesswork while trying to plan and budget for the coming fiscal year. The new bylaw will give us a better understanding of the available funds necessary for more prudent financial planning at the end of each December.”

Taxpayers are encouraged to register for the Tax Instalment Payment Plan (TIPP) — a pre-authorized payment plan which allows residents to make monthly instalments throughout the year, without penalties or interest. To register for the TIPP program, visit the MD of Taber website at www.mdtaber.ab.ca/p/tipp

"Registering with the TIPP plan is the most convenient and surest way to pay your taxes on time,” says Reeve Harris. “As this revenue is vital to the overall operations of our municipality, we ask for your support, your understanding – and your patience."

Staff will offer additional information as needed and continue working with the public to provide further guidance during this transition.
